Dishwasher detergent in salt dispenser..Help please

Hi, my mum has put dishwasher powder in the salt dispenser of her Bosch compact dishwasher. I have managed to scoop out as much of the powder as I could and then have rinsed it through with warm water.

The salt compartment now looks empty (little viewing window on front panel)

Mum has run the dishwasher through several times a day (apparently) without detergent, but when she opens the machine at random times the water is frothy and milky.
Naturally she doesn't want to use it to wash her dishes.

Has she 'broken' the dishwasher or is there something else that I/we need to do?

I'm not an expert, but if it was mine, I would put the salt in as it should be and just carry on using it.

I also wouldn't open it part way- all that matters is "does it clean?".

    Thanks...
If it was mine I would do the same.

The truth is, I think that Mum has lost her confidence in it and is too, too worried about 'things'. She is in her late 80's and frets a lot.

I think the only way to placate her is to get a new one.

Buy a fancy-looking Finish dishwasher one-use cleaner- and tell her it is a special one for this "common" problem? That could/should restore her confidence :-)

And not to ever open the door mid-way...

the powder would have disolved in there by now if she has done a few washes,
fill it up with salt right to the top this will displace the remaining liquid into the machine, do a wash without putting anything into it & this should get rid of the remaining detergent
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

    Thanks
I phoned Bosch about the problem and was told that an engineer would need to sort it out! £90 +VAT + parts!

Unfortunately mum has lost her confidence and is worried about being poisoned.

I can't imagine that she will be satisfied with anything less than a new one.

Mothers ! what are they like ! lol ( Have the same problem myself at the moment.

Do you live in a soft or hard water area? If it is soft, I would just give it a couple more quick 30 min washes, with nothing in it, then do a cleaning run. Then fill up the salt and use it. The dishwasher powder wont kill her, The plates will just taste a bit scenty.

If she does want a new one, stick with Bosch, they are great. Euronics have a free 4 year warranty on Bosch product at the moment, or 2 years and money off and 3 months cleaning tablets.

    Worth a look

Could you find a friendly local repair person who could come out for a small charge to give her reassurance that it's working OK? We have a local domestic appliance man who charges about £25 for a call out.
Replacing it is very expensive and she may just make the same mistake again.
I think it's normal for the water to look frothy and milky when its running through the cycle. ( yes I have opened it when it's running, 'slapped wrist' )

Thanks it's a hard water area. I have been looking at John Lewis for the Bosch they often have 5 yrs warranty.
We do have a Euronics very close to us so worth a look.

Thanks you are so right! I don't know of a local man. We live in London so everywhere is very expensive.

If she does get a new one I think we will have to get a dishwasher tablet or the like so that she doesn't make the same mistake again.

We have very little time to get this sorted as mum has seasonal eczema that make her hands and fingers swell and split. She needs to keep them dry as much as possible- hence the dishwasher.
An added complication is that there is nowhere to view compact dishwashers. She is now worried that the water fill hose will have the wrong attachment on it!.

I saw mum this afternoon and she has pretty much decided to get a new dishwasher. She can afford it so I think she just needs to decide which one and order it. If it doesn't suit we will have to return it.

Hardly money saving but at your mums age, if she can afford it and it gives her and you peace of mind, why the heck not.
Perhaps you could sell the old one to get a bit of money back for her or if she's not bothered about the money donate it to somewhere like a British Heart Foundation, that way you'd feel some one has benefited.
Hope you get it sorted soon. It's very stressful and upsetting having a worried, fretful elderly loved one.
