No, we didnt count it out, but assumed the banks money would be correct, ........
lesson 1 - never assume anything. Ever. Check, otherwise you are accepting the risk of any error being your problem. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Who, in their right mind, wouldn't check £2k in cash ? :eek:0

A reputable builder is hardly going to try to cheat you out of £40 as it's probably cost him more than that in lost time dealing with it.
As for cash, it's hardly proof of tax evasion no matter how many times HSBC may tell you. The last builder we had accepted cash or BACS/FP credit as he had lots of problems with cheques and didn't take cards yet. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. "i think the builder should have counted it when he took it"
I think your husband should have counted it when the bank teller handed it over and then counted it out to the builder.
Hopefully the bank find they error and refund. All that glitters is not gold.0 -
I've never seen a blank not count out cash by hand when withdrawn over the counter so that's a bit odd for starters.
So either:
The bank made an error and will refund or
Your husband took some cash inadvertently or
The builder is lying
take your pick0 -

Personally I try very hard not to take cash , to be quite frank its a pain in the backside. However , if a client does pay cash , I wouldn't dream of counting it out in front of them. In my eyes , it would show distrust and in my business , trust is a two way street. They trust me in their house , I trust them to pay the full invoiced amount.0 -

I have, several times at Lloyds, Santander and Nationwide, on amounts in the thousands. They are quite happy to give you a pre-counted and pre-weighed bunch of notes, and I am quite happy if nobody behind me in the Q knows that I am walking out of the bank with thousands in cash.
Similar with coins bags - I can't actually recall any occurrence when they counted out the coins when I asked for e.g. £20 in £1 or 50p coins.
May be I am too trusting but I never had any reason to think they didn't give me enough, or too much, money.0 -
Builder should have counted it at the time of receipt.0

My husband went to the bank today to withdraw £2000 to pay our builder. The bank got two bundles of £1000, in sleeves, put them in a sealed envelope and giving them to my husband. The builder rang and said there was £20 less in each bundle. Rang Bank, they said that they would check the machine that weighs the money, but we haven't heard back.
Is there anything we can do? we've paid the builder before, but never had a problem.
If the worst comes to worse you've only lost £40.0
