With a pensioner in tow, you either want to be close to the venue, or close to the mainline station, in order to minimise at least some of the travelling - i.e. tumble out of Euston into hotel, tumble out of hotel onto train, etc.

You'll have to pay more than £100 a night. As a guide, I stayed in a locally-run chain hotel on a side street between KX and Euston earlier in the year. For a one-person, single room with a VERY compact en-suite, that was just over £80, with no breakfast or any extras. PM me if you want the details.

Would it be worth contacting learndirect to explain the situation and ask if they would consider contributing to accommodation costs/ assisting with the hotel booking? It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to ask given this is an award and at pretty short notice for booking accommodation. After all, they can only say no - and they might say yes.. to be able to get somewhere more suitable for your dad might make the experience more relaxing and enjoyable for both of them. Many congratulations to your son by the way!

I could be wrong but the YHA Youth Hostel in Holland Park might have private rooms (twin/doubles) as well as dorms. It's v near to Ken High Street and a taxi could drop off at top of Philmore Gardens where entrance to hostel is to save walking through park.
As it's in the middle of the park it is actually v peaceful at night because it's away from the busy main roads.
Or have a look at hotels west from HSK in Hammersmith area, bit further out so hopefuly cheaper - they could get a bus from Hammersmith stn to HSK and the roof gardens.

Congratulations to your son. I hope they have a fabulous time - the roof gardens are lovely, and they have some flamingoes up there!

Had a quick look at Ibis Hotels, the one at shepards bush is £104 per night and the one at earls court is £114.

Didn't have time to check travel to them from Euston or how far they are from Kensington high st but they are both in that part of london.

    Hi

There is a website called travelstay that specialises in London hotels. I've had a quick look for your dates and in the Kensington area they are starting from about £60 a night. You can also search by Kensington on the site which is pretty good.

Pm for a voucher code :)

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and advice. I managed to find them a deal on travelzoo through superdeals -

The Imperial Hotel Russell Square, £126 a night with breakfast, slightly over budget but because they are staying 2 nights they get a free 3 course dinner the first night and a free river cruise.

Looks like a half decent place and not too far from Euston, a wee bit further from the roof gardens but looks like they are easy enough to get to.

Thanks again and my son also thanks you for his good wishes.

    Hi all
To explain, yesterday my son won the scottish region inspiring learner award given by learndirect. As a result he has to attend the National awards ceremony in London on the 11th of June.

Now here's where I'm stuck - he is taking my 79 year old dad with him as his plus 1, learndirect are paying travel expenses so that's not a problem, they will be getting in to Euston Station. As they're travelling from Scotland and bearing in mind my dad is going they are going to have to leave on the Tuesday morning and back Thursday lunchtime as any less time would either be too long for my dad or they would be late for the awards doo which is at The Roof Gardens, 99 Kensington High Street, London, W8 5SA

So (and sorry for the long winded speil) my question is where is the best area for them to stay? Ive been looking at hotels but having no clue of London I'd probably end up booking a place miles away from the back end o beyond. Also the prices of places suitable for a 79 year old man ie not hostels are a tad high? yes i know its the capital but gee swizz.

Will prices get cheaper the closer to the date or am i better booking something now? Argh!

Again sorry for the mini novel there i'm just at a loss what to do for the best. Thanks in advance for any help.

The Roof Gardens is quite near to Hyde Park and really is very nice, i would say that the nearest tube station is High Street Kensington which is only about 3 minutes walk if that. You have a vast choice of hotels to stay in around the Kensington area.

If you don’t mind a 20 or so minute travel then the west end of London may have good accommodation for less money.

I don’t think it matters when you book as the hotel prices do not really fall but you may be able to get a deal if you look out online, i think your dad will be ok around London, there is plenty of taxis and buses if he gets tired and places to stop off like cafes or pubs. Good Luck
