How often do you mow your lawn at the moment?

We have a big lawn and pay for it to be mown once every two weeks. However, within 5 days of mowing it is already very long and actually going to seed. Have just measured the length now and it is currently 20cm (that is 9 days post last mow).

I have asked the person who mows the lawn to mow it shorter next time (Monday or Tuesday).

However I am confused:
- is the grass just growing ridiculously fast at the moment? Or
- is it not being cut short enough?

I appreciate that it could be cut more regularly, but we don't want to do this (cost): so we want the best "balance" - ie best lawn height achievable when only cut every two weeks without compromising the health of the lawn.

We didn't have this problem at the previous house, but we used different people to mow the lawn and the lawn wasn't as lush and healthy as here (a lot more mossy).

Any thoughts?

Our garden isn't exactly flat, so can only get it down to it's second lowest setting which I have now done after 2 mows. I would say ours becomes a little too long within 2 weeks, but would only mow every 2 weeks. It's certainly no 20cm in that time!

I would just say get it down as low as you can. Harder if you've had rain, but with the recent warm weather it was a good time to try and get it done. :)

its down to the grass type that is down , if you have alot of meadow grass in the lawn then it will grow quick , also May is the prime month for growing also if you have dogs that use it again this will make it grow, It hard to keep up to at the moment it will slow down come July and I cut my own grass once a week and my customers grass once a fortnight it is growing well at the moment

I usually cut mine once a fortnight but because of the longer days, warmer weather and heavy rain at times I had to cut it after about four days this week, the second cut was just to tidy it up and the mower hardly took any off but as the weather man was hinting at rain this week I decided to get in before it got too long. My grass doesn't usually grow very fast but I had fed it in April and it does look and grow better for it. I think that anyone who does want a good lawn as opposed to a grassy area does have to cut it once a week to keep it looking top notch, I'm not so bothered myself as long as it's green and neat.
  • Mine is cut every weekend by DH, it was done on Saturday and has grown quite a bit since then. We know when it needs a cut as our 'dainty' border collie won't step on it if it's too long! :rotfl:

I cut mine once a week, occasionally slightly more.

Cutting it shorter will make it more likely to brown in the summer, and will also increase the moss. The "lush and healthy" lawn you now have is partly owing to the grass not being cut too short.

We cut ours once a week and twice if it needs it in the summer. The weather we have at the moment is ideal grass growing, some sun and rain. We don't cut ours too short in the first place because the weeds would get in. My husband is very lawn proud but it does take us 2.5 hours to cut it all and that's with about half of it being mulched.

I do mine once a week. I'd do it more if I could but its not always possible as I need my OH here to look after the little one. It grows stupidly quick and I hate it when it looks overgrown.

When the grass is so long the cats start crapping in it. :)

Generally every 3 weeks or so - it needs more than that but I don't have time.
Mum pays a gardener to come in and do hers every two weeks. It's a bit long if the weathers wet and warm by the end of the two weeks, but that's generally sufficient.
I don't think the atypical weather is helping - mine seems to be growing more quickly than usual as well.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

May and June are the fastest growing months for grass , you really cant have a routine time when it needs to be cut, if its growing then cut it , when it slows up then cut it less......
