Write-off offer less than replacement value.

Any car of a certain age - including the ones the OP has found on AutoTrader - is going to have had fair amount spent on maintaining it and will have some new(ish) parts, so this will already be reflected in the valuation. It's certainly a pain in the backside if your car gets written off a week after you've spent (say) a few hundred poinds on a new clutch, but there's nothing to say that the one you find to replace it won't have a nearly new clutch as well, so it's not actually obvious that you've lost out. And if it doesn't have a new clutch it might have a new catalytic converter instead, whereas unbeknownst to you yours was on its way out, so you've gained with one hand what you've lost with the other...0

if you are using the third partys insurance then haggle lots, i got a few hundred over the book price on mine, so have found a similar car but one year newer with the extra i got. i dealt with the third partys insurance rather than mine so i had no excess to pay and they have been amazing then all you do with your own insurance is a notification, i had no idea this was being done but all done and paid out within 3 days. good luckgoal for 2014....i will manage money better ..must resist shopping..............:A0

If the replacement were better than the original in other respects then there is a degree of trade off but there is no way someone should accept a settlement that would only get them a substandard vehicle.
Modifications are a grey area as many policies have small print that exclude them even if you tell them so you can pay to modify but they will only pay out for a standard car.0 -
You do nkt have to acept the first offer the ins co gives0

Well, the insurance aren't budging. They insist that's replacement value. The only one I can find for the price they're offering is 100 miles away, but if my car is a write-off, how am I getting there? There's apparently no courtesy car because mine's been declared write-off, but if no suitable replacement can be found, what happens? I've left my details with dealers so they can try and find something, but how long are we allowed to haggle if the insurance refuse to budge?
I'm not being fussy here. I just want to replace the car they're writing off with something of equal standard.0 -
Can you not haggle on the one closer to you?
Unfortunately the cost to go and buy the car will be down to you. Train, bus or ask a friend for a lift.
There must be more than 2 suitable cars for sale that you can buy?"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -

What car and what are they offering? If you post here you'll get advice on how far out they are.
And if you aren't being "fussy" about your replacement, how come you say there are only 2 possibilities??0 -
Quentin. There's only 2 appearing on the searches, because they're a blooming good car, and tend to sell fast. Of the six I asked about yesterday, five had been sold and the other refused an AA inspection, so I didn't bother with that.
:rotfl: It's 100 miles away... and you're not kidding, are you. :rotfl:Unfortunately the cost to go and buy the car will be down to you. Train, bus or ask a friend for a lift.
Next, you'll be suggesting I cycle or walk to work. All 20 miles each way.
The more into this I have to get, the more I'm utterly convinced that insurance is the biggest rip-off ever.0 -
Tell us how you calculated the 150 shortfall.
(And tell us how you come to think that your car is so hard to replace!)0 -

I have bought a cars more than 100 miles away using trains and lifts from friends....no I am not kidding.
What do you want the Third Party insurers to do, buy you a car, hand deliver it and valet it for you as well? Accidents happen, insurance is there to pay for the repairs/replacement, some times you win some times you lose in these cases. For me I had to pay another £50 for my premium to increase this year through no fault of my own due to another non fault accident.
Someone has written off your car, admitted liability and made you an offer that's £150 less than an advertised car that's fairly local to you......can you not haggle and buy it?
You can then do the no blame, no win, no fee, no injury but please pay me £1500-£2000 for the none existent whiplash...happy days.
How much is the offer and what exactly is the car and extent of the damage?
You could ask them for a cash in lieu of repair and repair it yourself and still make money on it."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0
