Halifax Debt

I am currently in debt with Halifax for 2 overdrafts one for £1,500 & one for £500. These debts have been going on for years & are currently with debt collection companies. I have gone through bank statements over the last 5 years & can see I have paid nearly £5,000 in bank charges over 3 bank accounts held with Halifax.
I have been advised that I could apply to Halifax to have the charges refunded as I can show financial hardship e.g nearly having my home repossessed on 2 occasions because I couldn't afford the mortgage (a family member stepped in & cleared the arrears on both occasions) also having a lot of other debt as I was taking out credit to pay for existing credit.
Does anyone know if this is right? And if so do you think they will settle with just cancelling my debts if I agree not to pursue them for the charges?
Thank you in advance

Who advised you?
I see you have already been provided with the link to the MSE article on reclaiming bank charges in your thread yesterday

My friends mother works as a mortgage advisor for Halifax & said they are still refunding charges to some who can prove financial hardship but she wasn't sure what you needed to prove it0

Banks will consider financial hardship requests but it doesnt always result in charges being refunded. They may decide to freeze future charges for 6 months or things similar to that.
She needs to state that she is in current financial hardship. Make them aware of the debts she is in arrears/default with and how she is not able to make any spending other than necessary. They will check her bank accounts to see what her spending is like to make sure there are no luxury itmes (such as sky tv, mobile phone, dining out, takeaways or premium shop purchases etc). If they agree, they will will consider options.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
