Halifax debt help!!

Hi, I am unsure if I am posting on the correct forum, I have never posted before.

I am currently in debt with Halifax for 2 overdrafts one for £1,500 & one for £500. These debts have been going on for years & are currently with debt collection companies. I have gone through bank statements over the last 5 years & can see I have paid nearly £5,000 in bank charges over 3 bank accounts held with Halifax.

I have been advised that I could apply to Halifax to have the charges refunded as I can show financial hardship e.g nearly having my home repossessed on 2 occasions because I couldn't afford the mortgage (a family member stepped in & cleared the arrears on both occasions) also having a lot of other debt as I was taking out credit to pay for existing credit.

Does anyone know if this is right? And if so do you think they will settle with just cancelling my debts if I agree not to pursue them for the charges?

Thank you in advance
