Were they in the same band?

Preference isn't a criterion for most schools.

In relation to special circumstances, the Board of Governors of each individual school will look at the Special Circumstances claims and decide if they think the circumstances would have affected the child's score. So Antrim may have upheld their claim but not your son's, which could explain the discrepancy. Another possibility could be that both claims were upheld but the other child's PiEs/PiMs/NEFRs were higher than your son's meaning they anticipate that his score would have been higher had they not been affected.

This is cold comfort however, so I hope that your son makes it into either Antrim Grammar with your perseverance, or another school he will be equally happy with. Good Luck!

P.S. My daughter had special circumstances which either weren't upheld by her first choice, or only warranted an extra mark or two, as she was 3 marks outside their normal cut off band. However, in the past few weeks she had completely changed her mind about schools, preferring her second choice, which she got into. Everything worked out, as I'm sure it will for you, the school your son gets into will be the school he will be meant for and happy at

I can well imagine that you are fuming, I would be too. You need to take this up with AG immediately. Ask them
    1. What their lowest accepted score was excluding SC cases and
    2. How many SC cases they accepted and what scores did these kids have.
If you are left in any doubt at all, APPEAL.
I know AG took GL this year for the 1st time - you must use this fact in any appeal - quite simply, GL and AQE are not comparable - they are very different tests that have been shown to produce very different outcomes for many kids over the past 6 years, therefore, I am really surprised that no-one has yet mounted a legal challenge to the few schools that are trying to equate these 2 different tests just to suit their own ends. They are comparing apples with oranges. It is disgraceful that someone in your position is unable to really compare your child's AQE position with that of the GL kids which AG will be admitting this year.
