When is a 'new' car not new?

You need to get quotes for what a correctly priced correctly delivered new car, from a comparable type of company is, and what price a pre reg is now. That should give you a price difference you should expect to be refunded for the lesser value car they delivered to you. I would pursue that value back, any extra costs to sort out the insurance etc, plus compensation for the nuisance. That would put you back into the position you would have been in had you agreed to buy a pre reg in the first place, and would seem a reasonable solution if you went to mediation or court. It's also a much lesser value than the cost of the car, so much easier to pursue.0

Do the homework, send a letter before action, then take a punt and make a claim. It's a fair bet you would seen to be acting reasonably, and they wouldn't. Be even better if you had their response in writing!0

I'm tempted to send a Letter Before Action, but I have no idea what to claim for at this stage. I'm tempted to attempt to return the vehicle under the Distance Selling Regulations, because I suspect that it could be easier than trying to substantiate any perceived loss in resale value. I doubt I'll get a response, so then it would cost me c. £550 to make a claim on MCOL.0 -

An interesting point, but I'd still be inclined to include it as a comment by them in the lead up to the action, particularly if it goes to mediation, to justify why it got to the claim. So not actually as part of the claim.0 -
The car was built to his spec, delivered straight from factory to UK franchise dealer to OP, with 8 miles on the clock, and registered on the morning of delivery.
Should be fine then. When the op does his comparison, he'll no doubt find there is absolutely no difference in price in a pre reg and a straight to owner car if you claim it's the same.0 -

And, no, I don't think there would be a difference in sale value between two identical near-new cars, one with two keepers, one with one. Even if there was, unless he was planning on selling so soon, this issue notwithstanding, the value difference NOW is irrelevant. It's the value difference at the time he would be selling normally that's relevant. And that _will_ be zero.0 -

Does it matter? 8 miles on the clock is pretty new to me regardless of what the document says.0

Yep. How much newer can you get? I guess you could collect from the factory but mileage could well still be the same.
If I buy a TV from a shop and leave it in the box without opening, I then sell it on Ebay as new. No-one would ever question that it wasn't new, this is the same situation. The car has never been driven by anyone else so it is a new car. Their documentation should make it clear that the V5 is not immediately available though.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
