All good feedback - harsh but fair.

Just to confirm - no it did not get it wet or damaged in any way, in fact the bloke in the Apple bar was amazed at what good condition it (iPhone 4s) was in. I should also point out that the fault is intermittent. Wifi started working again a few days ago then stopped recently. Anyway I am going back to the Apple store for another chat about this to see what can be done. Is there no one out there who feels an iPhone 4s should at least last for 24 months? (you don't all work for Carphone warehouse do you? ;))

Apple have no liability under SOGA, their warranty which was in addition to statutory rights has expired and the retailer would the responsible party now.

That was only based on the OP's initial recitation of the report, that the phone 'SHOULD' be replaced.

The actual wording of the report was completely different.

Sorry for not quoting accurately :p . I re-read the initial summary in which I said "Apple Engineers report which clearly states that its a hardware fault and that the phone should be replaced" whereas in fact the report said that its a "...hardware fault that can only be resolved from replacing the device..." which maybe sounds a bit more non-committal/not admitting to the nature of the fault - not sure?

I realise that proving there is an inherent fault such as this is difficult. In particular when I could not inspect the quality of the solder on the chips upon purchase as removing the cover would violate the warranty. I am still getting the feeling like you are all ganging up on me ? :) (but please keep them coming this is all valuable feedback)

Definitely more non committal! :D If they had said that then really Apple should be replacing (if they said it should!) but yeah theyre basically saying its kaput :(

I actually do have a 4s and havent personally had this problem, its 22 months old (well been used for 22 months old, not sure how long since it was made, if that makes a difference, I guess the 4s is super old skool now...

It doesnt happen to all of them, and I guess not enough for them to consider it a design flaw.

Yes, I am one who thinks that it should last for more than two years.
But why are you even asking for people's views on that?

The only thing that is important is that the law says you need to prove that the fault is inherent.
You have been told that the best way to do that is to get an independent report saying as much.

As for your second question... no I don't work for CPW.

    Why do you think that?

I can assure you that if you do what I, or a few others have said, you will almost certainly get a repair, replacement or partial refund from CPW. It is all up to you now :p

    - Change the name of your device

The new operating system seems to have an issue with apostrophes. At least when it comes to wi-fi.

Check out your device name. If it is called something like “Claire’s iPhone” it could be the apostrophe that is causing the problem.

To change your device name go to Settings > General > About > Name. Tap on the name to edit it and remove the apostrophe. Save the change. Switch off your phone and then switch it back on again.

    Your wi-fi should be working.

We have no idea why this seems to work but many users in Apple’s community forums have said that it works.

I worked in the Repairs team at Carphone for a long time, and unfortunately I don't see this going your way.
The issue seems to be the update to IOS 7 itself - I've done a lot of digging and can only conclude the software doesn't work with the built-in WiFi controller fitted to certain iPhone 4S models.

That itself isn't an inherent fault, quite the opposite - in effect the phone is fine, but the software update stopped it from functioning. That wasn't CPW's fault.

Could it possibly be argued that it is indeed an inherent fault as the phone wasn't manufactured to such a standard that would ensure that it would continue to work correctly after Apple updates had been installed?
Unlikely I know, but maybe worth a shot.

I could understand this not being the case if you were talking about a phone that was purchased many years ago, but it seems bad having a 15 month old, expensive smartphone losing a good deal of its functionality simply because it is not compatible with newly released software.
