75 yr old here (well will be next week), and I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8" which cost £179 (I think in Dec) and is now about £130 ish and I find it perfect for my needs. Hotukdeals will show you best deals. This may help:-

Thanks very much for the suggestion, and Happy Birthday for next week!
  • I bought a second-hand Asus TF101 Transformer, which came with a neat keyboard:

I wanted a bigger screen as well. It's heavy and slow by modern standards. My recollection at the time is that the other good value options were (a) the Barnes and Noble Nook HD, but apparently the charging cable is prone to breaking or (b) the Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

I think there's a market for a larger no-frills tablet; sadly the only large tablets are very expensive, e.g. the recently-announced Surface Pro 12". A magazine-page-sized device would be superb if the price and weight could be kept down.

Just got a Virgin Hub which does both 2.4 and 5Ghz signals (Dual-Band wireless) -- so now I'm honing in on a bargain tablet that can pick up both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals (Dual-Band), so that his wireless internet always runs smooth.

It's an education, this tablet-hunting lark, it really is! :)

Then again, the slower wireless should be fine for his purposes, but if there's a bargain tablet out there that can also do Dual-Band...then why not?

Looks like it'll be the Nook HD+ for him -- he would be reading on it quite a bit so the sharp text rendition will be good.

Also, I have approx £30 of Nectar points which apparently can be used in Argos physical stores, so I'll try to cash them in tomorrow to bring the price down a bit :)

Another vote for the HD+. Solid build quality, reasonable specs, excellent 9" 1920x1200 screen and extraordinary price.

(But it's twice as good if you're brave enough to install Cyanogen!)

Hi there, any ideas where I could buy a nook hdtv adapter in the UK? Worried that I'm not seeing any on sale anywhere!

A quick Google shows that the UK B&N site doesn't have the HDTV adapter, so you'd also have to import from B&N US. It's US$40 + shipping at the moment, so it would be good if you could hold out for a sale to bring it to about £25 delivered - or try eBay, perhaps.

I got my new 32GB Nook HD+ from eBay, and it was £110 delivered (back in November), so you may want to try there. 16GB should be fine, too, but an extra £5-10 for the 32GB will be nice to have, just in case!
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
  • I bought a brand new 9 inch 32gb Nook HD+ for £99 two days ago and it came this morning. It's lovely and so much better than I thought it'd be. Very easy to setup and I've already transferred all of my ebooks, music and tv shows to it :) Definitely get one if you can find the adapter.

Has anyone successfully used one of the Nook US HDTV adapters in UK?

Would like to buy a Nook HD+ but need to know for sure that:

    A) a Nook TV adapter (were any ever created for UK market?) is available for him (he's excited at prospect of streaming things from the tablet onto his TV) and --

    B) if a US Nook TV adapter actually is compatible with UK TVs.

Found this Reddit post from someone in UK trying to use a US Nook HDTV adaptor:
