I thought it was the national lottery itself that bans payment by credit card - sounds as though not all retailers comply.

I didn't know they'd stooped to that level of social engineering, but not unexpected. The other card providers consider it a cash advance. You see, they know what's best for you.

    How is that social engineering?

Making a minimum IQ for purchase of lottery tickets would be social engineering lol!

So I said, "So I can't buy a lottery card using my debit card if I'm already in my overdraft?" and she said "That would be fine.", so I said "But it's still borrowed money!", and she said "But it's a debit card".

You had a go at totally the wrong person there mate.

The poor saleswoman is there to sell you products from the shop, not advise you as to how you should/shouldn't use your debit card. Thats for YOU to make an informed choice, not her.

We [the CC companies] think gambling is [socially] bad, so we're going [to engineer the situation] to make it more expensive for you. How about that?

Sounds like she got told the rules, but understand the reasoning why.

I don't think you should expect staff to be able to defend the policies of their masters, simply to clearly tell you what they are.
A bit unfair to take it out on or blame the staff.

I do agree wiht you the rationale is flawed, but you need to take it up with the chiefs.

If you own a company then you can do what you like within the constraints of the law.

I've read a few of your post GingerBob and you seem to have a downer on just about everything. You must be a fun guy :-)

Did I say otherwise? I'm merely pointing out the social engineering aspect of it. It could be compared to those hideous pictures we now see on fag packets.

    I welcome this.
I think we should be encouraged to drink responsibly, accept responsibility if we smoke and gamble, but still have the choice to do these things.
None of it would stop me smoking, drinking, gambling if that's what I'd want to do, nor would it make me terminally miserable :-)
In fact I'm delighted to live in a society where I have these free choices.

Do you think not selling children fireworks or tons of over-the-counter medication is also social engineering?
If not where do you personally draw the line?

I'm not going to debate these complex issues with you.

Up to you but I don't think anyone in the MSE community will take you seriously if you won't explain or back up what you've said.
It's good that you've acknowledged it a complex issue though.
