Accidentally bought lottery ticket and scratch card on amex

Hi, I was in sainsburys the other day and along with my groceries I accidentally purchased the ticket and scratch card with my amex instead of my debit card. Only just realised. Will this get classed as a cash advance? I dont want any surprises when I get my statement.

You'll be fine as the MCC will be entered as Supermarket, Groceries or similar, depending on which till you used.

You never have to worry about something posting as a gambling cash advance on an Amex since Amex have banned gambling transactions on its network.

I didn't know they'd stooped to that level of social engineering, but not unexpected. The other card providers consider it a cash advance. You see, they know what's best for you.

I buy lottery tickets a lot on credit card they have never been considered a cash purchase.

Although Sainsburys should not have it is company policy not to allow lottery purchases on credit cards as it is with the COOP. You can kill yourself with cigarettes and alcohol with as much credit you require but gamble on a lottery oooooooh nooooooo.

Not the reason why they say no to credit cards on lottery tickets at the Coop. It is because there are low margins on lottery tickets and the credit card fees just cut deeper into them.

I was told by the coop that it was in case the transaction failed. Think i would be more worried about the goods i had. Anyhow the spar and tesco both allow them.

I remember being declined before as they stated gambling can not purchased using a credit card, but they are quite happy to process the transaction using a debit card. Something to do with a rule about gambling using borrowed money.

So I said, "So I can't buy a lottery card using my debit card if I'm already in my overdraft?" and she said "That would be fine.", so I said "But it's still borrowed money!", and she said "But it's a debit card".

Sounds like she got told the rules, but understand the reasoning why.

This happened to me the other week in my local Co-Op.

I'd accidentally overpaid my credit card and felt lucky so I attempted to purchase a couple of scratch cards.

When the cashier told me I couldn't proceed unless I used a Debit card/cash I must admit it took me by surprise.... Having queued behind other folk in Sainsbury's, for example, when they bought Lottery related items on credit.

Hey ho.... Cash is king and all that!
