Have about 6 pots of Hostas. They are beautiful, but the vast aray of snails that live in my garden are causing chaos ! I've tried slug pellets, but these do not work. I have pets so not sure what is the best way of saving my lovely Hostas. Any suggestions, please?:o Hostas are all in pots, not in the ground. Thanks

The slug petllets should work. If the pots are on the ground check them carefully and use pellets in the pots. also sprinkle some around the pots. If you can get them off the ground then you have a better chance of keeping the beasties at bay. i have a dozen or so in pots on a tiered wooden stand which looks great when they are all in full growth and unchewed.

If I had Hostas in pots, then I would add a large saucer underneath each one and fill with beer. Put the slug pellets around the floor outside the saucer. I would also put copper tape around the edges of the pots.
Hostas are lovely but not when the slugs have feasted on them.

Try vaseline around the rim of the pots, they fall off, assuming the pots do not touch other plants.

  • Wool pallets around the base of the plant and then a 'sacrificial' plant nearby is doing wonders for our cabbages at the allotment. We tested half with and half without the pallets and the ones without have been ripped to shreds leaving the others really strong. They haven't even had a gentle nibble out of them!

In the last property I bought, I inherited lots of eaten hostas. I created an environment for hedgehogs and they (and their babies) rewarded me by looking after my hostas.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I was at a National Trust plant fair at the weekend and the lady behind the stall said that snails hate garlic water. Apparently you boil up 4 cloves of garlic and then strain off the water and let it cool and it keeps the snails off.

I haven't had chance to try it yet, but it might be worth a go!

Hi not sure if anyone has mentioned egg shells. Slugs/snails do not like the feeling of sharp edges.

I have put egg shells all around my veg patch and have been lucky enough not to have any slugs/snails attacking any of the veg.

    Hope this helps.

This makes sense actually. Two of my pots are on pea gravel at the bottom of the garden and these don't get touched by snails - they obviously don't like pebbles either:)

I have hedgehogs, but my snails must be their buddies :)
