Good Deed From Yesterday

This may come across as a bit smug.

Yesterday it being a beautiful sunny morning and I was up early so I went for a short walk (about 1.5miles). Also had a load of washing in the machine that would be ready to hang out on my return. My route takes me passed a sheltered accommodation block (old folk that are semi independent). Just as I walked passed a little old lady caught my attention "can you help me, I'm lost" she called. I couldn't nor wouldn't ignore her. Anyway I walked with her back to the front door of the block guessing that she lived there. This particular block (in common with most of them I imagine) has an intercom system and key pads so I pressed some buttons told the lovely lady that answered what I'd found and stressed that the old lady seemed a little confused. After a few seconds the intercom lady buzzed back with the reply "please keep Mrs ******** company her daughter is on her way". In what seemed no time at all her daughter & husband arrived offered their thanks and off I went.
It set my day off to a cracking start I felt invigorated! By 12 noon I'd put the washing out, hoovered the house, cleaned the bathroom, supermarketed, made salad for tea, eaten brunch, ironed stuff from Saturday and restarted reading a book that I put down 2 years ago.
Really need more good deeds in my life!

    Blimey, well done OP :T

You don't come across as smug at all to me. Just someone who gets a lot of pleasure from helping others out. If only there were more selfless souls like yourself around, then the world would be a much nicer place.

I am also mightily impressed by the superhuman, multi-tasking, domestic god this happiness spurned you on to be! And all by 12 noon on a Sunday. Amazing!
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Helping others makes me feel good too, I hope it's not smug! I have just come back from visiting my Dad and sister. Stayed 5 days .Dad has vascular dementia and sister is very poorly with an auto-immune disease that attacks her muscles. While there I did my Dad's tax return (which he was REALLY fretting about), changed his library books and took him to a Sight Centre to see what technology was available to support his failing eyesight. Also supported my sister at a meeting with officaldom, took her out to lunch and did some housework for her. Feel really good that I could help make things a bit easier for them.
Didn't follow on with domestic goddess activities at home though! You beat me there!

Nice to read of a good dead. We need more helpful people as we get older.

Not the opp. I think it is a worry that when people need a little help, like we do with DIY/ lifting heavy things we have to pay for that help.
What I am trying to say is that it is not often that people will help and give their time for FREE.

    Well done eamon.

Isn't it sad that something like that isn't commonplace though

I like to see people helping each other - that's the way a healthy society should work.

But I do think good deeds should be done because you want to do them and then tucked away. I don't really like the 'look I did a good thing' chat afterwards though.

Why not? Most people get a 'second hand' feel-good moment when they hear about a good deed and will be primed to do something similar themselves.

It's the difference between the daughter coming on and telling us about how some kind stranger helped... which is heartwarming to hear about and restores your faith in fellow man.... as opposed to the individual coming on and telling a 'me' story... Which is more of a self indulgence.

To me the first scenario is an 'ahh, lovely' but the second is more of a 'hmmm' moment.

I don't like the idea of people doing "good things" just so they can boast about it but that wasn't the case here.

We tend to only hear of the bad things that happen in life; it's good to balance that out with some of the good stories (like the threads about 'random acts of kindness'.

People's behaviour can be affected by what they see or are told goes on - if all the good deeds are hidden, fewer people will do good things. If the good things are talked about more often, people will see that behaviour as 'normal' and will conform to that normality.
