Note that you do not need to wait for 14 days, even if he does return your deposit you can still take him to court for non protection.
You could do it right now if you wished. Although i'd recommend keeping it amicable until you've got written agreement of the tenancy being surrendered on the 1st of July.*Assuming you're in England or Wales.0 -

But yes, quite agreed, keeping it all civil and nice until we're well shot of the place. Feeling much calmer now. I shall leave it to him then. He'll have our written agreement to leave before July 1st as soon as I have the moving crew booked, then if he plays silly !!!!!!s with the deposit, I'll embark on yet another new drama!

Are you sure your deposit is not protected? Agreed, it sounds unlikely as you have not been served the prescribed information, and it makes no difference to the validity of any S21, but it might be worth checking the deposit protection schemes. If they do have your deposit protected it would make it easier for you to get it back.0

I will check, but I was never given a certificate, or saw one, and when I was badgering the LL to get one he started off completely ignorant about the whole thing and was very, very dismissive and disinterested. If he did actually get it done, it would be the only helpful thing he did in 2 years!

Can I check by address, or is it a case of finding the names of each schemes/agencies (apologies for lingo of ignorance) and checking each one in turn?0 -

Just for info, we have found ourselves able to move by the end of June, thus avoiding any unpleasant encounters with an unpleasant man. Now all that's left is to recover deposit.
I have started another thread to ask that, but just in case any reader here knows; considering we have no deposit cert and the LL is unlikely to agree to use deposit as part payment for last months rent, how likely is it to be a hassle to get back the deposit? He is highly likely to try to keep it all/a large percentage, and IMHO has no reason to. If he tries this will it most likely end up in small claims court? As he has no deposit protection, is he likely to be fined 3x deposit amount?
In the absence of a secured deposit the LL CANNOT give you notice to leave unless he returns the deposit in full first.

In your situation, given that the landlord is a numpty and an @rse, I would be minded to not pay the last month's rent unless you relish the time and effort it will take you get a penalty awarded you in court. But only AFTER the landlord has agreed IN WRITING to allow you to leave in the middle of a rental-period without paying the full rent up to the 20th of July.
Having said that, this landlord deserves to get his @rse kicked in court. Hard. Very hard indeed.0 -
