Sky Cancellations fiasco

I'm just off the phone to sky cancellations department, my contract ends with them on the 3rd July 2014.
The girl i spoke to refused to cancel my account as she states i'm in the first 12 months of my contract. I said i don't care if i get charges i just want it cancelled she said i cannot do this as it needs to be 31days notice from 2nd June... Bonkers!

I have a right to cancel when i want the contract charges for 2/3 weeks left will be minimal - this is just bullying/stalling tactics!

No, you have a right to cancel whenever you want AFTER the twelve month minimum term has ended.

If you want to cancel after exactly twelve months then you must give 31 days notice on the 2nd of June-exactly as you have been told.

Sky's terms and condition with regard the minimum term are very similar to other providers and are hardly "bonkers".

Just call them back and cancel in two weeks..

Not according to Sky's own help section here
When you agree to sign up to Sky TV, HD, Sky+, Sky Multiscreen, Broadband, Talk, and/or Line Rental, a minimum contract period applies (also known as a minimum term). For most Sky products the minimum contract period is 12 months unless otherwise stated. A minimum contract period can also apply if you take up certain offers from Sky, in which case you will be informed of the minimum contract period before accepting the offer.
If you stop receiving a service within this time period you may have to pay an early termination charge. We will contact you to let you know if these charges are due and how much they are.

OP, I'd recommend calling them again and explaining the situation. It's possible that the advisor you spoke to misunderstood and was telling you that you would need to wait to cancel to avoid any charges (as this is what most people do).

Fair point, but this is a money-saving site so I wouldn't expect (or advise) anyone just two weeks from concluding the twelve month minimum term to be paying a Early Termination Of Contract (ETC) fee.

Neither would I, but the OP seems to have made up their mind and was aware of the ETC they would have to pay.

Therefore it was just a case of telling the OP they had been misinformed by Sky, and to try a new advisor.

The HTT charge would be under £10 for 2 weeks i guarantee that, the thing that is annoying me is these idiots using bully tactics to stall cancellations!
