Can I use PAYG sim in an expired contract network phone

I have lost my mobile phone but think it might be somewhere in the house (under the spring cleaning...) I have had the number barred until I can have a serious search.

Meanwhile I am going away for a few days tomorrow and need a temporary phone. OH has offered me his old Samsung (not smart phone) which he has since replaced with a new phone and new number on a new contract. Old number has expired (and I assume been recycled) as the phone reports it is not registered to a network (it used to be Orange)

Can I go into Tesco phone shop and buy any payg sim and install it and will it work?

If not unlocked it needs to be an orange SIM card as it will be locked

May be cheap to buy an unlock. Code off eBay for it then put any network sim card in it

You can but you may need to get the phone unlocked for it to accept a different networks sim.
