next best to free is the rather inexpensive admuncher (at https://www.admuncher.com) get the current beta [4.7] and be amazed at how it rips out text and graphical adverts!0

But is not a very good firewall though.
The windows firewall is one way. It only stops incoming.
So if spyware finds its way past - and you know some will... it is then free to "phone home" with all your personal details etc.
You need a two way firewall such as Zone Alarm or Norton along with your ad-blockers.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. No problems whatsoever. I use both with no conflicts at all.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

No problem.
I was thinking as much of all those people who think their XP SP2 firewall is safe.
Personally I use Zone Alarm and having seen it in action I bought it. That got me a free anti virus program which auto updates and so stays on the ball.
For Ad blocking I use Ad-Watch and again, having tried the free version, I bought it. That came with a pop-up blocker and again updates are frequent.
Microsoft only updates every now and then - MILES too late for most things.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. As IE6 (with SP2) blocks ads it also manages to block those sites that try and install spyware/adware automatically on our machines.
I also use ZA and use NOD32 for my anti-virus as its lot quicker and has detected more "in the wild" viruses than the likes of Norton AntiVirus. Having read a lot of reviews about anti-virus software the one thing that lets NOD32 down is that it doesn't have the big name backing behind it like Symantec.0 -
Yeah. I sat on a couple of microsoft support groups for a while. The two firewalls that got the most good mentions while I was there were Norton and Zone Alarm.
I heard fewer people swear at Zone Alarm than at Norton, so that's the one I picked. Never been sorry I did.
Those groups are also the reason why I have Ad-Watch and SpyBot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster.
I don't rely on Microsoft for anything in the way of real security. Very little in the way of spyware gets in through that lot - and none of it gets the chance to "phone home"Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
