    Ah I see. I must admit I've seen Amex signs a lot on my travels abroad, but never used one, as mine charge forex fees where I have Visas/MCs which don't!

    Indeed. Most of my foreign spend is the US, so American Express is not really a problem (I've only ever encountered one place that wouldn't take Amex and that was a parking meter in Washington DC). My main card is the forex free Lloyds Amex.

    I was in Australia recently though and never once had to use the MasterCard, it was accepted literally everywhere. Europe is a different story though, acceptance is just about acceptable in France (Most chains take it but 95% of small businesses don't take it) and its pretty good in Sweden, Belgium and Germany (pretty much accepted anywhere credit cards are but often only debit cards are taken in Germany). The rest of Europe is pointless though unless your using it for petrol and big chain hotels. I've heard its improving in Italy as well but have only heard that from colleagues.
