I've been googling wheelchair stair climbers

They appear a great idea but I cannot find how much they cost. Are they that expensive that they are afraid to tell anyone .

Anyone out there know how much they cost and as to whether they are any good. Would be very grateful for any advice.

I haven't heard of them, but guessing they would be expensive as there carrying the weight of the chair
We ha a heavy duty stair lift *(up to 150kg) that was about 3k, - would it be pratical to have the wheelchair lift going into a spare room, I know one of our neighbours had it going from the dining room to the spare bedroom.

Have you got an OT u could speak to regarding it?

They are very expensive - if you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Is there some reason you can't use other disability aids or lifts which are more commonplace?

You'd need a wide staircase so that you could maneuver (spl) the wheelchair onto it. If you had room it may be easier to get a proper small lift fitted.

  • I wouldn't get in one if it was provided free and I had a staircase the width of Buck House and Arnold Schwarzenegger was doing the pulling - and yes I have seen and used one in rescue situations.

Rescue [and bariatric] is the only event these things should be used.

    Well, I'm still interested.

I've been told a new one is £5000, second hand between £2500 to £3000. It's a motorised contraption so how much pulling is involved I just don't know.

Its a thought for the future anyway, to enable me to visit friends. I can't take the money with me when I go so, if I like it once I've tried it, I will be treating myself.

It looks an interesting bit of kit, I can see why you are interested - especially as it seems that it can be used on most stairs. Pity about the cost though!

We looked at these when trying to find a way to get our son upstairs.I honestly dont think they would be viable inside your average house as you would need to have a lot of turning room top and bottom of stairs.

We were told our stairs couldnt take a stairlift (couldnt lift son into one anyway)and our house is too small for a through floor lift.

We were given a stairmatic stairclimber but my son couldnt use it as there was no support at all for him(he cant support his own head never mind sit upright).

Ended up getting a Stella Smax stairclimber. We had a headrest attached, extra chest straps fitted and a lipped cushion.I hoist him son into it and then were off :) Wouldnt be without it and its great for narrow stairs.
It can also be easily split into 2 parts for taking to other places

For large bits of equipment i have found, that over here, its very difficult to find a price and i think it can be cheaper, even with import duty, getting the item from abroad.
I have spent hours online looking for special equipment and find that the American sites are about the only places that will actually list a price for the items.
  • A through floor lift is not much more and does away with stairs and risk altogether, it gives independence, unlike the stair climber which almost always needs supervision and help .
