Microsoft Office is a paid for product! There are ways of getting discounts. For example if you are a student or perhaps your firm is enrolled in a scheme. If you don't want to pay then there are the free alternatives mentioned above.

Yes, it's free. Just create a Microsoft account(I never use my real details), sign in and away ye go.

    Sorry, Excel Online is here.

"Save documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online, in OneDrive. Share them with others and work together at the same time. Get started now, it's free!"

This is the cloud version. It uses Onedrive (used to be Skydrive).
Any old Microsoft/hotmail account will do or create one. 7GB per account (well it used to be).

Office Online is nice, but is a very heavily cut down version.

If she really needs Excel, then she really needs Excel.

Libre Office is compatible with Microsoft Office except
    for macros.
As with any search for a download I usually avoid the advert search results that come up first and click on one of the early proper search results.
The following is a proper download link for a windows version
    http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?type=win-x86&version=&lang=en-GB
