Cheaper alterantives to Microsoft Office?

Because I can't justify spending that much.

I am a Windows 8 user. Are there any cheap alternatives to Microsoft Office please? Someone did suggest Open Office - but where's best to download that from? I did download it the other night, along with a load of viruses and other unwanted crap.

It needs to be something that supports .doc and .docx

Thanks.

    From here? http://www.openoffice.org/

If you have lots of viruses etc then maybe your virus checker needs updating too. I use open office all the time, completely interchangeable with MS Office. Others will have different suggestions, there are a handful of good substitutes around so no need to donate any more to the microsoft cause unnecessarily.

Yes, it was from there. I've done a scan as suggested and it has worked, thankfully.

Ah I knew there was one with a French name. I might look at that though at the moment OO does everything I want. What are the main differences/improvements would you say?

Mostly look and feel - and that was really needed when you look at openoffice.

Libreoffice came about when the some developers left openoffice as it came to be owned by Oracle after Sun was taken over by Oracle.

You can see some of the differences here

    http://www.howtogeek.com/187663/openoffice-vs.-libreoffice-whats-the-difference-and-which-should-you-use/

Personally I still need to use Microsoft Office - there are still too many gremlins in Libre and Open office for me - not least performance.

If you need something that supports VBA, then there is no alternative.

If you just need something that sort of opens/saves Office formats, and your income doesn't rely on it, LibreOffice.

Has she tried any of the applications mentioned in this thread? Chances are one of them will work well enough for what she needs to do (unless her course includes VBA coding).
