    Thankyou for your helpful posts.

I'm mostly cross because Vodafone led me to believe that there was a fault with the phone itself, rather than 'ignorance' as to mobile data. If they had told me how to turn off mobile data in the first call, then I would only have had one huge bill, not three.

I also don't understand why this would suddenly happen out of the blue, when nothing else has changed?

I'll be taking your advice on unlocking the phone and switching to a PAYG option.

    Thanks again.

as you got an iphone use the Built in very basic data monitor,

google iphone data monitor (the data monitor apps do not really work on apple unless you remember to open them, you're better just using the apple iphone built in very basic data monitor)

it tell will you what apps is using all your data (once you looked at it reset the stats generally you should do it every billing date (the the bill is made, not paid,My Vodafone app will tell you) so you can see what is using data every month (apple really need to step up there game 2014 and no data monitoring with auto data switch off or warning, even windows phone has that)

also do some very basic thing like Install My Vodafone app (even works when on wifi was was a surprise, first time its opened it has to be on 3G after that you can turn Wifi back on and still use it)

getting 3 shock bills in a row means you not monitoring your usage at all on the phone and you have the same issue with any network if you do not do the above (apart from Three real unlimited, or Lyca/giffgaff/VirginMobile/T-mobile unlimited ish data, as you really do not need to monitor your data on mostly unlimited data plans but should any way as more data use means less battery life)
