Since most people will have long since chucked their VHS collection along with their VCRs, I think the time is coming when new TVs won't support VHS playback any longer.

Uh-huh .... Those dealing with legacy formats usually know when they need legacy gear to go with them.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have now bought a new top quality scart lead which seems to have solved the problem. I now have another one:
The video recorder has started missing off the last few minutes of anything I record. Any more suggestions?

Looks like your original SCART may not have been a FULL SCART, as in it might not have had all of the pins, or all of the cables inside, or they were damaged.
How are you recording? Manually I presume. 1st thing to do is make sure the time on your VCR is correct, then just add a couple of minutes either side. If the broadcaster has poor timekeeping, or the schedule changes at the last minute, there's not much you can do on your VCR.
If you'd bought a PVR instead, it would get the time from the broadcast, and would automatically start and stop simply by selecting a programme from the TV guide to record, then it would start and stop when the broadcaster tells it to, which MOSTLY gets it right, even when the schedule changes at the last minute.
Presumably though, you've got a good reason to still be recording with VHS when you could have an SD Freeview recorder for less than £50...
