The thing is to claim housing benefit the decision makers will need bank statements and a sudden jump from having £20-25,000 to £5,000 (which is under the £6,000 housing benefit savings point) may raise suspicions dof deprivation of capital rightly or wrongly.
The OP may get themselves tied into a contract with a landlord and then get treated by the council's benefits team as though they still have the 20 odd grand even though it's been spent.Spelling courtesy of the whims of auto correct...
