Disabled and wanting to get my own place: 22 y/o

Hi,
I am a graduate, unemployed and want to get my own place.
I done temping but my disability/symptoms prevented me to stay employed, unfortunately.
So i will get back into work, hopefully, but i want to move out of a family home and live independently now.
I have £5000 in savings and am in receipt of DLA higher rate and income based ESA
But i tried the benefits checker and it looks like i have to be a current tenant to get the housing benefit,
So do i need to sign a 6 month + flat rental contract first, then apply for housing benefit?
Are there restrictions on my rent, based on the fact i get DLA and ESA?
I dont intend to live in a council property, so do i just find a property and move in and then apply for housing benefit?
I want to live in Central London, but is this possible with housing benefit in a private property. (i use a wheelchair)
Is there anything else i should be aware of or the order in the way i do this?
thank you

Get the job first, keep it for 6 months+ so that you know you have a regular income and then see about moving out.
It's not just the rent you need to worry about; Electric, Gas, Water rates, phone line, broadband, TV licence, TV package, Contents Insurance.
Housing Benefit will only pay out a proportion of your rent - not all of it, I wouldn't use your savings to pay for rent. It will all disappear very quickly, especially in Central London.
Have you even looked at rental prices?
Good luck with your search, but my brother in-law who is from London only moved out aged 31, he had a full-time average pay job too. He's now 33 and every day is still a struggle - and he is able-bodied.Unite Disability Champion & Equality Rep0 -
Er, not long ago you had £20k in savings?
Generally, those under 35 are only entitled to the shared room rate of housing benefit. But if you're entitled to the severe disability premium within ESA, you're entitled to the one bedroom rate.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I would visit your local council housing office and speak to then.
Although you don't want to live in a council place I am wondering whether your wheelchair use may make it difficult for you to find private accommodation - ie the doors may not be wide enough etc etc
The council have to give you housing advice so personally this is where I would start.0 -
So you want housing benefit to pay for your flat why don't you use the other £15,000 of savings you have in addition to the 5k you mentioned ?i dont want to hide the fact i have £20k in a ISA + Stocks and shares ISA, but how much will it hurt my ESA income?Spelling courtesy of the whims of auto correct...

But in the post you made on the 9th May...you hadn't even got your Visa to travel ?????.........
by the way, im going to Moscow for treatment - HSCT for MS
It is a intensive treatment (includes chemo) but i should need to be there for longer than 30 days, and the Dr said he can write me a letter if i need to stay longer,
i dont want to lie in my 'purpose of visit' but i have heard of patients who declared their intention and there visa was rejected
so would it be okay to just apply for a tourist 1 month visa?
whats the worst that could happen, as surely they wont monitor that im going to a hospital........0 -

Funny I thought he wanted to use his deposit to buy a house ..not rely on housing benefitHi,
I have a £10k student loan, and want to buy my first property
I have £25k saved up, but also have a £10k student loan,
from my wages £40 comes out each month for student loan repayments
I intend to buy my first property in a few months

Cancellation ?
Do you mean that in the last 7 days you've managed to undergo treatment that you stated in a previous post, takes between 30 and 45 days ???0 -
I gather OP has had to cancel that trio bur still intend to go asap. Salt one reason why it might have had to be cancelled would be due to a relapse in ms which would be a very frustrating medical outcome.
I am guessing OP saved a lot of money living at his parents contributing very little. Their intention was to get a job and put a deposit towards a house.
Now they've lost their job due to a relapse, can't get treatment until remission and in between loss of job and cost of treatment has to our dream of ownership on the back burner.
I'd I am correct OP I'm really really sorry and hope yoy can get the treatment very soon and be another ms sufferer for whom it is beneficial adding to the statistics of successful outcome so one day it becomes standard treatment. I how toy will then be able to get the job you've studied for so one day you can save again and once again be in a position to but a property again.0
