My husband and I have recently successfully applied for a sainsbury's loan to consolidate some debts.

My husband spoke to them after the initial application, they sent the paperwork out to us and we sent it back. They have now rang me today to say that the need to verify my address. We are both on the electoral roll and we have spoke to the council to confirm this but for some reason it is not shown on our credit reports on equifax.

None of the utility bills are in my name as my husband lived at this address before I moved in and we never changed anything over, I just send money to his bank account each month to cover my half.

I don't have a driving licence and I also haven't received a P45 or anything while living at this address.

The person I spoke to at sainsurys said that I would need to get my name put on one of the accounts and then get them to send us a bill.

What do they accept? She mentioned council tax but my husband has spoken to them today and we first have to write to them to request it and won't do it over the phone, which is going to take longer than we would like.

The only thing I have is my bank statement but they don't accept that.

What would be the easiest thing for me to do? Thanks

Banks will usually accept a bank statement or credit card statement if you have either of these delivered to your home address?

OK, with the 24 lenders I work with on a regular basis, Sainsbury's not being one of them, they will all accept a bank statement but not an online statement.

Here is a list of what all the lenders I work with will accept:

Bank / Building Society Statement containing current address (not more
    than 3 months old).

Council Tax Bill for current tax year.

Local Council rent card or Tenancy Agreement.

Utility Bill (not a mobile telephone bill) (Not more than 3 months old).

Original mortgage statement from a recognised lender (Not more than 3
    months old).

Recent Inland Revenue Documentation, e.g., latest Notice of Coding (not more than 3 months old).

Sounds like they are being awkward/stupid. Maybe consider kicking them into touch and going somewhere else?

Hmm, could do but we've got this far and just want to complete if possible.

We were declined by Tesco before we applied for Sainsburys so I don't really want any more searches on my file.

I wonder why sainsburys won't accept a bank statement then!

Sods law as that is the only thing I've got in my name right now.

Your own bank may be an option?

With my bank, I had a pre-approved loan amount up to £25k on my internet banking. I applied for a loan of £7,5k and the funds were available in my account within minutes.

    I'll look into that, thanks

Just thought I'd update on this...After telling my hubby what they had said he rang them to ask why they wouldn't accept a bank statement as proof of address. He was told that the person who i spoke to must have been mistaken and that the would in fact accept a bank statement. After looking through statements, found one from January (I only get them sent every 6 months). He rang again to check that this would be OK as we wasn't sure if it would have to be more recent but they assured us it would be fine.

Faxed he documents through yesterday and hubby rang this morning to check that they had got them and everything ok.....only to be told that they won't accept a bank statement. Hubby explained that we had been told twice that a bank statement would be fine but no, apparently the first person I spoke to was correct and the two people since were wrong!

So now we're no further along than the other day.

I really don't understand- I've never had a problem like this with any other lender. I feel like they are just being awkward.

The quickest way is possibly to add your name to the water/gas/electric and get them to send out a statement.

None of the banks I work with would accept a bank statement from January as the criteria is that all proof of address must be dated within the last 90 days.
