I also like Anne Fine's books - if you like Libby Purves then Anne Fine's books are similar. If you don't mind something a bit 'old fashioned' then I'd also really recommend anything by Dorothy Whipple. If you're a Downton Abbey fan then 'The Priory' will be right up your street.

LOVE Dorothy Whipple. A lot of the Persephone Press catalogue is great

Hi anyone know of any good art books preferably factual, I've read the yellow room Martin Gayford ordered one about a forger who fooled the nazis am looking for that kind of thing , I know there's one about soldiers in WW2 whose job was to find or get paintings back ( think it's been made into a film) but the reviews aren't that good.
Just any fascinating reads I think that there was one about nazi paintings or hidden secret art
    Thanks
Well, we enjoyed the film about the art the Nazis were hiding but I can't remember what it was called ... The Monuments Men?

There's a children's book about art being stored in a mine in Wales which was on the TV a Christmas or two back, I enjoyed that too, if I fall over the book I'll put the title up. It was very funny.

I guess you might enjoy Kate Mosse, I'd certainly go for her over Dan Brown.
Signature removed for peace of mind

I'm a Sophie Kinsella fan. I think I have most of them now but particularly liked "Remember Me" and "Twenties Girl"
  • Thanks all, I have downloaded all suggestions on to my Kindle and will spend the next decade slowly getting through them!

I forgot to mention I had read all of Maeve Binchy's books. They have kept me going for the last decade!

    Thanks again

First book hard going for about a quarter of the book, then you're away & you won't be able to put the books down & will want to watch the films too.
Yes it's dark but also an absolute page turner

Alexander McCall Smith is a good author if you want a good book but nothing too heavy-going. I like the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency (and its many sequels). The books are set in Botswana, and the main characters are very likeable.

Just don't make the mistake of reading it on the train, crying in public is never a good look... :)

Nice, escapism books that I tend to go back to if I want something easy and comfortable are:

    Addition by Toni Jordan
Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married by Marian Keyes
    Jemima J by Jane Green
    Ralph's Party by Lisa Jewell
