If you have a passport, your booking information and a credit card then nothing else matters as they are easily replaceable.

I only take hand luggage for 9 days or less, and make a trip to the nearest convenience store, or Lidl / Aldi for other stuff when I arrive. This shop is usually shampoo, shower gel, vodka, cider, fruit juices, coffee, milk, sun cream, lemons, etc. It takes about 1 hour when I arrive, but saves far more than that in time spent checking-in luggage and at baggage reclaim. Whatever is left over at the end of a stay gets left for the housekeepers with a note and a tip, and I let reception know also so that the housekeepers don't get into any bother.

    Hand bag
    passport
    boarding pass
    itinerary
    hotel confirmation
    car hire confirmation
    travel insurance doc
    purse
    sun glasses
    EHIC card
    camera
    phone

    hand luggage
    house keys
spare copies of all tickets, confirmations, etc...
    7 pairs of knickers
    5 pairs of socks
    swimsuit
    spare bra
    3 pairs of shorts
    1 dress
    linen trousers
    sarong
    5 day tops
    2 night tops
    shrug
    flip flops
    phone and camera chargers
    plug adaptor
    reading glasses
Toiletories: eye gel, 50ml sun cream. roll on deoderant, mascara, toothbrush, mini toothpaste
    address of nearest lidl, etc...
    print of recommended restaurants

I would include those with the "things which can be bought". I once arrived at a hotel and realised that I had forgotten to pack any pants. No problem, I didn't let it run my trip, I just bought some more.
