At the moment, he hasn't lost you. He will do if you are offered another job. That's the time you can turn the tables and when you will have more chance to get your increase...if indeed, he values your work so much.

At the moment, it's all threats, but nothing to show for it.

    And this is your problem

At the moment its all hot air and flapping of gums. Until you can go to the manager and say I'm off because I've got a job paying me £x, there's no reason on this planet to pay you more.

I just feel like if I turned around and said I'm off, he would budge. But then our relationship has been hurt somewhat. If the company was corporate, I know I'd get a raise. It's an open office where everybody knows everything. I hate the fact that I have to have a standoff with the boss for him to acknowledge what I do.

In his position, I'd be insisting on ensuring that someone else in the company had access to all the business critical elements - passwords recorded SOMEWHERE etc - on the 'what if he fell under a bus?' principle. One of my 'missions' at work has always been to make sure that life could go on even if I did fall under a bus, which proved useful when I tripped over a recycling bin, shattered a shoulder and was signed off for 8 weeks, no questions asked.

Keeping the website online isn't the skill that is the specialism... that's like asking Leonardo Da Vinci to write out a list of where he keeps his paints and brushes .... it's what happens when those brushes are in his hand that make the magic.

Anybody can keep a website online .... it's the marketing aspect and the analytics analysis and coming up with the strategies that are measurable, repeatable and that work that's the skill. All things you either have to learn, or have a natural bent for.

Seems like you know some of your stuff :) Don't think people understand how behind the scenes, we're secretly changing images and fonts to squeeze out more sales.

Something as simple as changing the font can yield 1% more sales. There was something a while back where a company simply changed some text.

They changed "Sign up for a free 30 day trial" to "Join today for 30 days free". This simple changed yielded 25% more sign-ups.

Pure luck. Nothing to do with knowledge or skill.

If it was knowledge or skill they wouldn't have had the wrong strapline all those prior months / years.

I'm sure they've changed it all again now to get a better conversion rate. Changing images, text, titles and fonts consistently is what improves a businesses profit. Subtle changes in capitalisation and font-usage can yield large profit gains for companies like Amazon where a 0.01% increase in sales is thousands.

    Oh stop !!!!! footing around.

Get a higher paid job offer and hand in your notice

He'll either increase your salary to try and keep you (and at this point you can decide whether to go or stay) or he won't.

If you believe that you're worth more -prove it to him and then the ball is in his court - just be prepared to follow it through if he calls your bluff

Minimum wage isn't £16000 per year. More like £11000.
Best to look for something else. I'm paid £6.31 an hour and not going to get an increase anytime soon. I'm applying for better paid jobs.

have you tried taking out a job wanted advert on gumtree and any newspaper/media or online job board site available to let your city know about your skills, this would be one way of finding out whether there any companies out there in your neck of the woods or not then you will have a final answer and can look at applying elsewhere.
