OMG I completely forgot about child benefit. Yes I do claim it. I suppose I meant I had never claimed any benefits directly relevant to my situation. Duh0

If you are claiming CB, you will be getting credits towards your pension.0 -

Err, so you don't claim child benefit? Since you said you were on ML. BTW its 'effect'.

SMP does not automatically credit NI contributions, you have to apply in writing before the end of the benefit year (Jan-Jan) following the tax year in which you are entitled to the credit. Clear as mud.0

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my thread. It really helped.
I thought I would post an update. I went to the jobcentre today (as I already had an appointment). They were very unhelpful when I showed them the letter and said it was nothing to do with them. I phoned the helpline on the letter and was immediately informed that they had made a mistake even before I gave them any extra information.0 -
If you have enough money then you could always find-out how much you need to pay to bring your NI Class 1 contribs up to date for Tax years 2011/12 & possibly 2012/13. Once these have been fully-paid, you should automatically become eligible for Contribution-based JSA.Never Knowingly Understood.

I don't think it works that way. Voluntary contributions don't count towards the JSA calculation AFAIK.
Has the OP looked at child tax credit / working tax credit? It might help.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
