Wilkinsons are lying about original item description

I recently ordered a large stock pot from Wilkinsons, I was looking for something with 15L capacity or larger and I chose this item as it was described as an 18L pot, you can find this on their website by searching stock pot.

Unfortunately when it was delivered I discovered it was much smaller, it had a capacity to the brim of about 15L and a useful capacity of 12L of boiling liquid approximately.

Disappointed I sent Wilkinsons a polite email and after an initial reply saying it would take them a few days to look into this, I received a second reply saying the following: "...We have looked into your query regarding the capacity of the pot and our website clearly states the size as 12 litres..."
Much to my surprise when I went on the website again the stated capacity of the pot has been changed to 12L. In fact in the review section you can see someone has previously commented complaining that theirs wasn't the 19L size advertised, so it much have been previously advertised even larger.

What can I do? I ordered the item knowing the advertised size was larger than 15L and when I complained they have changed the description and pretended it never said 18L. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you in advance.

Others seem to be having the same problem, so perhaps you should point Wilkinsons towards these reviews:

Have you got the link to the item on the website? It's possible Google, or one of the other available services, have a cached copy of the original to enable you to fight your corner.

  • Yes that is the web page exactly as I saw it when ordering, I have also found the receipt that came with my order and it clearly states "Stockpot 18L" in the product description.
Should I just demand they refund the money or should I report this to the trading standards authority? As they have described the item wrong and then lied and attempted to cover it up.

The person who advised you probably wasnt aware of the description change or didn't look into it other than what size it states.

How did you word your email? What did you say?

If others had complained as well, it's quite possible that the website was changed before your complaint was looked into.

But as your receipt says 18L, you are entitled to a refund.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Exactly this ... SNAD - Sold Not As Described. You are entitled to a full refund (including initial delivery charge) and they are also liable for the cost of returning the item.
  • What if I would like to keep the product though, do you think I am entitled to compensation for it not being as described?

Of course not. Sounds like you're just after a freebie.

You can certainly ask them to reduce the price but they can refuse and opt for a return/refund.
