What’s the answer to that one? (From somebody who’s actually seen it.)

Well I've seen 4K TVs showing 4K content, and it's stunning. Does actually look a bit 3 dimensional.
But yes, in the short term, these screens will be fed, at best, 1080p Blu Ray.
There's only a certain amount you can work with, in the same way as DVD upscaling, and I don't personally think it's worth it, but it'll still be a better picture, like for like, than a 1080 screen, if there's a good upscaler in there, because of hopefully improvements in the processing and panels. That's a prediction really, rather than fact, but comparing to DVD upscaling again, the biggest improvement here was using HDMI rather than SCART, whether the upscaler actually did any good or not. PS3 is a great device to play DVDs on upscaling wise.

The choice via this media is tiny too.
Only "early adopters" with too much money purchase at this early stage of development.

And thank god they do or the technology would never make the breakthrough into the mainstream.

The manufacturers deliberately take advantage of those early adopters to test the waters on their new products. Otherwise, they'd have to take more risks with new technology but I don't think it would stall development altogether.
