New job and credit check

I have recently recieved an offer of employment from a major bank however this is subject to a credit check and criminal check. I am confident about my criminal check as I have no record of a criminal nature. However my experian credit report has dropped to very poor due to taking out a 2 credit cards with very low limits within a few months of each other. My credit utilisation is 77% but I am paying them and I have never ever defaulted or missed a single payment. I am also only 19 so not build much of a rating up. There are also a significant amount of searches on my report due to pressing the apply button to much a while back. My total debt is around 1500. Basically I want to know what the employer will look for and if this will affect my job application? thanks

Not that I believe these CRA scores that much I'm suprised its dropped to very poor you must have really hit the searches especially with no other adverse history on your account. Mine actually went up after opening a couple of new accounts.

They will be checking for fraud markers, defaults and Court Judgements not credit searches or low credit limits.

If it is a bank that reports to the CRA's then they will do a full credit check, with your permission first.

    Hi,
The salary benchmark for this position is in the region of £46,000 however any offer is dependent on experience.
Our credit checks look for CCJ's/Trust Deeds etc and wouldn't normally raise issues with defaulted payments.

    Kind regards

Or more precisely, with your forced permission (no permission, no job). I guess permission is the wrong word here.

I think you'll find it's the right word. Your choice if you don't want them to check.

    permission
    pəˈmɪʃ(ə)n/
    noun
the action of officially allowing someone to do a particular thing; consent or authorization.
"they had entered the country without permission"
  • Just what business is it of a potential employer to enquire as to the creditworthiness of a job applicant?

None of their business in my opinion!

Not quite. Your choice if you don't want the job, more like. It's a kind of permission under duress. In effect you've got to give it; no choice in the matter. To use "permission" in this context distorts its meaning. "Mandatory condition" better describes it.

It should be only in very limited circumstances, but in our Brave New World the requirment is greatly expanding.

I wonder if we will follow in the US's steps and start seeing restrictions on which employers can do credit checks.
