Cex - never use this store

I have always felts that CEX and their second hand mobile flogging ilk are slightly dodgy operators but now I know it to be true.

Last Saturday I bought a Vodafone-locked iphone 4 for £145 in the central Liverpool branch. I specifically asked about a return on the off-chance that my old one may show up. I was told provided their was no water damage - no problem - I could go to any store and get a full cash refund. Got home and predictably my old one DID turn up - it had fallen down the back of the bed.
Tuesday after the bank holiday returned to the Manchester Piccadily store to claim my £145 - was told not a chance- the most I could hope for was a credit note to use again in store. Outrageously you can only claim this within a 48 hour period or you dont even get that - just the offer of an extended warranty on the phone you bought, which has a warranty anyway!!!!!!

I have only now started looking through websites like MSE and Facebook and can see that a head of steam is building about this company and their flagrant disregard of the Sale of Goods Act. It seems they get around the law by classing themselves as a "secondhand goods" store and not as a retailer.

In the Manchester branch staff pointed to some in store signs that "fully explained" the returns policy. They were behind the till and I wouldnt have seen them if I had been in the store all morning.

This may not be technically illegal but it is certainly sharp practice or at least lousy staff training, or possibly even CEX has an unwritten policy of deliberately misleading customers.

I am now broke and can only hope to flog this silly voucher on ebay, probably for below face price. But given the proliferation of second hand mobile stores this is something Trading Standards / Which? etc really should be investigating.

Broke and fuming , Salford Quays.

I hardly ever use them because the queue is always around the shop and 90% of the staff don't appear to ever do anything.

However, I did use them to buy a second hand HDD once (half the price of a new one the same size) I asked them if it was guaranteed to work and they said 'Oh yes sir, there's a 12 month warranty'. Not really what I asked because I didn't expect a long warranty, 1 month maybe, but it struck me afterwards that was probably a lie. It still works so I haven't had chance to test it out.

Just last week CEX gave me a swapout on an SSD that I purchased just over 10 months ago, and I ended up with a 40GB increase in storage space in to the bargain......so my experience says they honour what they say.

SOGA doesn't give you right of refund just because you don't need it anymore...

  • I would never use CeX again! I have never ever experienced such bad customer service!

I sold a games console a few weeks ago and sent it off to them with the power cables. When it arrived with them they said there was no headset or Ethernet cable (non of which are requested when making the order). They wanted to significantly reduce the order value! I said no and asked them to return my console and the game I sent.

They have sent me back a game with cracked box and writing on the inside and also a console that has something moving around inside and has 3 Dents on the casing!!

I have written several emails and they have yet to reply to any! I am absolutely furious! They have ultimately used my goods because they were in good condition and sent me some rubbish off the shelf that nobody wanted!

I don't know where to go with this one now other than bad mouth CeX to anyone I speak to!

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks
