Can someone explain what the big deal is about the bathroom location? The property I am buying has a downstairs bathroom, at the back of the house in an extension, and nothing upstairs.

I've always had an upstairs bathroom and would never buy a house without one unless I was desperate to buy. I do not want to go downstairs to use the loo in the middle of the night or to have a shower in the morning.

it depends on the house layout .
I moved last year to a chalet bungalow .The only bathroom is downstairs .
Its the first time I have had a downstairs bathroom but I do like it .

Lets say I would go to the loo more during the day than night time .

That's not so bad. In a bungalow, isn't everything downstairs ?

The problem is, when you are asleep upstairs, and need a pee in the middle of the night, and have to trundle downstairs to do it, in the cold of winter!

No, in a chalet bungalow the bedrooms are upstairs, but I can understand that if there is only one toilet in the house, then it might be better for some people if it was downstairs if they spend most of the day downstairs. But then again, I would never buy a house with only one toilet.

Could it cause issues when applying for a mortgage?
What kind of problems do you imagine it might cause when applying for a mortgage? The house either has a bathroom or not. The layout is not relevant if the owner can live with it.

Having said that, my wife had fun in our previous Victorian terrace when heavily pregnant. It was quite a trek from our bedroom at the front, to the stairs in the middle, down to the front, and then through the lounge/diner and kitchen to the toilet.

Why do have problems "down below" or something?

No, but I would only buy a house which had a downstairs w/c as well as an upstairs bathroom unless, of course, I couldn't afford any with both those features in which case I would have to buy what I could afford.

I actually agree with suziesue. When I first moved into my first house with two bathrooms I thought I was the bees knees, there was no way on earth that I would go back to just one, and it was a bungalow. When I was a child we had only one bathroom coming off the kitchen. You had a long walk in the middle of the night. Don't think bathrooms are allowed to come directly off kitchens now.

There used to have to be a gap and two doors between kitchen and bathroom, but I'm sure that's no longer the case. As kids our council house had bathroom directly off kitchen.

It's what you get used to. My house has an ensuite, an upstairs bathroom and a downstairs w/c. There are only 2 of us in the house, but it is so convenient having our own bathrooms and having a w/c downstairs for guests. Of course I could manage with fewer as I have done in previous houses, but given the choice I would have what I have now.
