Vodaphone refusing payment!!

I am asking you good people fr some advice for my sis-in-law.
She ran up a phone bill for £400, rang vodaphone and explained that she could not afford to pay it. She then offered them an up front payment of £150 with the rest being paid of over 3 months. They refused. They wanted much more than she could afford to pay. She asked for a letter to be sent that confirmed that she had offered to pay, but that they had rejected her offer. Vodaphone did send out the letter, and she has kept it.
It has now gone to a debt collection agency and somehow she now owes £1000 +++.
They are threatening her with bailiffs and being a 19 yr old girl she is scared to death.
Any advice would be gratfully received!!!

Good Afternoon
Has she rang them to see why the bill has gone up to a £1000, it seems from the limited information that she has had a couple of months of extreme use, vodafone would not have added penalty charges for late payment as far as i know they do not operate in this manner, how long has she had the contract for, if she has only just received it then she may have racked up charges through not being aware of the part month process for new connections
I would get her to speak to vodafone in your presence so she can let you take over the call and maybe shed some light on the problem as you may not be getting the whole story, but once they debt goes to the agency it`s normally too late to deal with via the mobile company, they don`t normally pass the debt on until 90 days or so, so i would see if she will let you speak to vodafone to see if you can get the complete version of events that have transpired0 -

Working for Vodafone, I can confirm what MrRincewind has said is correct.
Without seeing the account, I can't say what exactly has gone on, but an account is never sent straight to a collection agency, there is normally a period of at least 6 - 8 weeks.
The debt will have gone up due to the account being cancelled. When this happens, the remainding line rental is charged up front.
Having dealt with debt agencys on a personal level, most of them are quite alright you give speak to them. They'll only start threatening baliffs etc if they don't hear anything from you0
