Can they not refund over a few days.. I.e. £100 over the next 3 days. Or if it needs to all be refunded in one transaction, they should not bank the takings until they have £300 in cash available to the OP.

Given that you say "I have no phone for up to 5 days" presumably you do want another one, so why not just get it from Carphone Warehouse? That way the amount of cash they'd need to give you would either be none or a lot less.

Ring up head office and ask for reimbursement. Get paperwork of course from the shop to confirm you've returned the phone an owed £x.
Their accounts department should be able to deal with this.

Otherwise a letter before action should get their attention.

If they are struggling to raise the cash then they should make provisions to get it. They cannot just keep telling you to come back another time as they might have it

They might send a cheque back , what if the OP doesn't have a bank account? ( they say they don't)

I am surprised they actually took cash. I thought they needed ID for Money laundering regs, ( buying product then selling it on etc) A mobile phone is a very easy item to launder ( especially with Bold automatic ! lol)

Why? It is officially legal tender? You don't have to have ID to buy a phone in cash, why would you? Money laundering is a silly reason, they won't be after £300 phones....more like 300k houses.

And if they don't then what? Where exactly will empty threats get you?
A Letter Before Action would be the next step.

I am surprised you needed to ask.

I think you're best going in on a Saturday afternoon when they've done £300+ worth of PAYG top-ups - head office refund would take forever and be via cheque, and they're unlikely to have a cashpoint card for the store!

It may not seem fair, sadly I think it's just one of those things. I'm sure if you would take a £300 replacement phone or even £300 of network credit they could do it in a heartbeat for you.

Where you'd have to give them typically 14 days to sort it out. Not much use to the op when they've already said to come back on Saturday by which time they should have the cash.

...and I am surprised you suggest that. CPW have agreed to a refund and have said come back on Saturday to get a cash refund.

Giving them 24 hours and then sending a LBA really isn't the way forward at this stage. As a matter of interest if the OP had paid by credit or debit card how long would you suggested giving them to refund before sending a LBA?

    Lol

Based on that logic we'd not be able to use cash pretty much anywhere!

Do you get IDd when you buy a washing machine or laptop? Or a fire place or an expensive suit?

If the transaction was over 15,000euros additional checks may be required. But paying for a phone in cash, unless they have reasonable suspicion that the money is criminal property there's certainly nothing illegal about cash transactions.

In fact I didn't even show ID when I bought my last car from a dealer, they had my personal info for v5 purposes, but no ID and that was a £1500 transaction paid for with cash
