    I think one also needs to be careful in the decision as to who is it really best for? The parents or the children?

    One would have to ask yourself:

    1. Who am I trying to protect?
    2. What are my reasons for trying to protect?
    Abusive ex?
    Excessive drinking?
    Drugs?
    Step mom mean to my kids?

    If none of the above, then what are you protecting the children from? Until you can honestly say the kids are suffering because of knowing their half sibling, one is in danger of alienating your children from family they may well have a good relationship with.
