Mobile in USA

Hope that someone can advise what is best here.

My son is going to USA on a Summer Camp as a Young Leader and will be away for close to 3 months.

He is in a contract with 3 but what options are there if any for using his phone abroad for this extended time? Really don't want to be facing a massive bill while he is away.

Thanks

Three's "Feel at Home" includes roaming in the USA, however it won't cover calls between the mobile and USA mobiles/land lines. Only calls to/from the UK, including text messages and data... Which helps a little.

The easy way is to use Skype, as calls to most land lines in Europe and the USA cost around 1.5p per minute and Skype can be used either via the bundled data allowance (which I think works OK with Feel at Home), or via a free WiFi connection in a coffee shop or similar location.

Another option is a cheap pay as you go mobile on an American network and use the Three phone to call the UK with.

In UK '18185' offer calls for 1p/2p to US landline/mobile via 020 access number. I guess this can be used for calling from US to US for just 1p/2p extra.

Why use Skype, when other VoIP providers can be about 20% of the price?

I am in the US at the moment. Using 3 Feel at Home for data and Localphone for calls at 0.4p / min to landlines and 1.5p / min for calls.
