Hi,
Just after a general opinion really. How much does the lyrics of the first dance song matter?
My OH and I have a song we love but the lyrics are the opposite of what you would expect at a wedding!! But we really love the song. Theres a few others with appropriate lyrics but it just isnt as special to us as this song.
How much do you think the lyrics matter?
Thanks
Kirsty

I personally don't think the lyrics matter.
The song is about you as a couple so choose a soon for youFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
Some people will feel that they matter - which is fine, and they can choose their own first dance song accordingly. For your wedding, you should have the song that you want. I don't think the lyrics matter, what matters is that it's the song of your choice0

If the song means something to the both of you then go for it
Me and OH's song is mardy bum by the arctic monkeys. Hardly a typical wedding song but it means far more to us as a couple than some obvious weddingy song.0 -
Doesn't matter at all, in my opinion . We didn't have a first dance but I walked in to This Girl Is On Fire, and we walked out to Let's Go Surfing Now. We couldn't have cared less what people thought.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

Our sing is everyday I love you less and less which Im sure everyone is expecting to be our first dance song. I can't think of anything worse than a first dance and everyone watching us, if we have one it will be getting everyone up for a novelty dance0

how many people use I will always love you or my heart will go on they really dont matterThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50

I can't stand the cliche wedding songs, you should choose what means something to you both. The song me and my boyfriend will probably choose is George Harrison I got my mind set on you and people are saying it should be slow, but that's our song and I don't do the whole slow and mushy thing, especially in front of loads of people.0

Interesting.
When I got married first time I hadn't really been to many weddings (maybe none?) so didn't know about the first dance thing. The DJ asked and when I was unsure suggested Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston. :cheesy:
Ex left 4 years and two children later. I went through a very bad time with multiple health issues etc etc. Someone said to me that I had to learn to love myself which of course is a line from the song. So our wedding song had the ultimate poignancy - and it was so right. Listening to the words years on it's not about couple love at all - it's about finding strength and power from within.
Second wedding, lovely husband chose the first dance song; At Last by Etta James. The words were so meaningful- he'd never married. I'd never heard the song before and it was rubbish to dance to, but the words go very deeply.0 -
To put it into context, the song we really both love is Passenger - Let her go. Its a lovely song and the kind of music we both like and we love the tune, but the words are pretty opposite of a love story lol!0

When we started looking for a first dance song, we looked very closely at the lyrics. We're big rock/metal fans so wanted a slow rock song, but wanted to avoid the cliche power ballads. but we quickly came to the conclusion that most rock and metal songs aren't very "loving" in the way you look for in a first dance song.
Our band is playing our first dance song, so we had the freedom to take an existing track and change the lyrics, so we looked at "Community Property" by Steel Panther. The existing lyrics are not suitable for a wedding at all, so we started to change them but it was really difficult!
In the end, we settled on "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day, which is actually about leaving at saying goodbye, but it's a beautiful song that has a personal meaning to both of us, so we're going for it anyway.Aiming to pay off £50,312.94 in less than 3 years - Starting from December 2015
