How late can you leave it for the next months car tax refund?

To explain better, my sister is getting rid of her car, either scrapped or sold & there's about 10 months tax left on it.
We personally think it wont sell as it's a shed. How late can she leave it before she'll lose out on a refund for June? Obviously she's already lost out on May but when does she need to get it in by for a June refund?

If the car is not worth much more with the VED, then send it back nowish, in the past when there were regional offices then up until the last working day of the month, now you will have to send it off to Swansea, you have the postal service to rely on , so not worth cutting it too fine really.0

You only get full unused months refunded.
So the best time to send it in is the last day of the month, meaning you get the full use of the tax for the current month and the maximum refund.
In your case, post it back on 31st May before the last collection (get a proof of posting to save any hassle )0 -
For some reason i had it in my head that the cut off date was somewhere in the middle of the month. Thanks. I'll tell her.0

I think the point at which they calculate from is when it is processed by the dvla. Not when you sent the disc back. So bear that in mind. These public sector bodies can be notoriously slow.0

As quenton says, as long as its in the post by the last day of the month (might be an idea to get proof of posting) you will be ok.0

Pointless you posting what you "think"! Just confuses the issue.
The correct answer is return the disc on the last day of the month.
(As set out on the form you use to send it back)0 -
I've posted them back on the last day, quite a few times, and had the refund effective from that date.
I even posted one on 31 Dec from Morocco, and got the January refund...0 -
It always used to be printed on the rear of the tax disc, that the effective date is the postmark of the envelope you send the disc back in. Although I had a tax disc floating around here the other day I can't find it now to check. As above, though, get proof of posting. Last day of May is a Saturday, so you probably want to do it on the Friday to make sure.0

The form is V14 - https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-disc-refund-form-v14
The back says...
"To get a refund for each full calendar month left on the tax disc, you must post this filled-in form to us before the first day of the month you want the refund from."0
