It could have an effect as you are not resident in the property - is there any reason why he can't do this at a later date?

Are you on contributory or income-related ESA?

He's older than me and if anything was to happen to him I'd have a house for me and my daughters that's all.
    I'm on sickness ESA.

Yes, ESA is for people who are sick or have a disability. But are you on income based or contributions based ESA.

There are other ways that would allow you to have the house should he "anything happen to him". A will, for example. You don't need to be a joint owner at this stage.

He trusts you enough to be prepared to make one of the biggest commitment one can make with someone else, but he doesn't consider you (or you him) a partner?

The easiest option is for him to write a will.

Why don't you move in and live as a family? Is it because your benefits might be cut?

No I rent my own house and wouldn't move in with him as he lives in another part of town.
If he did make me joint owner of his house would I then have to declare this to the tax credits and ESA?
That's why I'm unsure about this or would it just be better he puts me in his will?

Yes he does but we both want to live separately

There's a name for people like that.
