The sign of a good toilet flush

When considering a toilet I used to think all were the same. What really gets me is why some toilets are more difficult to get rid of solid waste than others.

Is there such as a thing as a good flushing toilet and if so what makes it good. I always thought it was more water content but having seen some good ones at work, I've come to realise that a narrow and deep waste hole seems to allow a smaller water tank to give enough pressure to flush waste away in one go.

Is there a technical word or standard for this that one should ask for because otherwise its not until you install it that you've realised your purchase was a real poo poo. I need to start looking at sevaral for around the house.

Thx.

I recently refurbished our en-suite and the new toilet I fitted was one of these; http://www.ideal-standard.co.uk/product-details//e7855.html

Like you I always thought toilets flushed the same until we got this. This is so much better, uses much less water than the previous one but flushes MUCH BETTER. Hard to describe it but our old toilet used to sort of 'flow' when you flushed whereas the new one seems to quickly 'dump' the water and hence flushes much better and faster.

I can't comment on other toilets but I would highly recommend this one.

Hurrah! I thought I was the only one for who that mattered. Our current loo is terrible, even full cisterns of water don't shift a decent jobbie :-(
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

When we were buying toilets my criteria was a seat that didn't wobble... but can see how the flushes beat that!

This is what I was looking for. Good old style American to the rescue. With so many obese Americans getting rid of their waste, it was only a matter of time before vacuum assist toilets were made available to residential use. I've seen these at work in commercial places in the US, and they are brilliant. Very little water usage but a little noisy

There have been a few recommendation here but no indication of what makes a good toilet, flush properly.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has found them to be useless. The problem is that they have reduced the capacity of cisterns from 12 litre to 4 in the name of saving water, so the way to tell them apart is simply by the size of the cistern.

I was so keen to avoid a water saving toilet that I spent several years flushing my old one with a bucket after it packed up. I eventually relented and bought a new bog in Oct 2010, since then my water bill has gone up because it takes so many flushes to empty it.

There are no flies on the local housing association, when they refurbished my mums flat in 2009 they used an old style loo with a 12 litre flush. Presumably they didn't want to be plagued by tenants complaining that the loos won't flush. They must have a secret supply of them somewhere though, because I tried every plumbers merchant in town without any luck.

I never understood the logic in this, everyone now flushes twice to "clear the pipes", so 12 ltr used not 9:T:T:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I've also wasted money on replacing an old toilet with a new one which is not capable of producing a good flush and then Reverting to he older cistern again. But I think the thinking (mine included) is all wrong.

We should not be looking at the quantity of water (although that helps). As I mentioned, we moved to a new fit out office in Canary Wharf and the toilet pan has a very narrow and deep drop waste pipe. If you think about it, any decent drop of water will create a larger amount of force to push he waste away. When I flush it, there doesn't appear to be that much water being used. So it's great for not wasting water.

Problem is, how do I know find one that I can try before hand as its not something you can return once installed by saying your bog is bigger **it than the one I personally produce.
