Laptop recommendations please

Hi,
I wonder if you good people may be able to help me please?
I am in need of a new laptop as mine is VERY old and I can't even look at photos on there anymore.
I have a decent a camera and would like to view and edit the images on the laptop. I wouldn't use it for gaming though - just general usage. And obviously on a budget!
I have had a look and I am totally confused with 'Cromebook', 'Mac book', Windows laptop etc etc.....
Thanks for your time :rotfl:

Current model brand name and model number?

    Budget for new laptop?
  • I went from Windows based to a Mac Book Air to start with and now a Mac Book Pro, Retina display 15". Absolutely brilliant for photo editing (I am a wildlife photographer) and Macs come with a pretty good basic editor as standard. The Retina screen is very clear and sharp. You get brilliant warranty support from Apple all the time which can be extended to three years. Don't look back, go Mac :)

It is an old sony one that is about 4th hand and didn't cost me a penny, so couldn't grumble, but it's finally given up now!
I would prefer one under £500, but don't know if that is possible for what I need.

Thanks cheddar caveman, I will certainly look into that. Don't know much about them, but will research. I am just starting out with my new camera and would like to make the most of the photos I take :)

Ha ha, just had a quick look at Mac Book prices and don't think my budget will cover it! But I guess as it's a long term investment, it might be worth it in the long run :)

Nah, don't believe the hype about Macs.

The Macbook pro will set you back about £1100 for the entry level model.

Laptops tend to have relatively poor screens. So you can spend a fair amount on the thing and still end up with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.
Compare that with the resolution produced by your camera and you will see that is quite poor.
Even the best laptop screens at 1920 x 1080 pixels are poor in comparison and they add a premium to the cost of the laptop. Example here

Of course you can use an external monitor in conjunction with the laptop if you are serious about your photography.

With a budget of under £500 you would want to go for a Windows 7 laptop. For photo editing you'll need a large screen, 13" or more. There decent Asus laptops covering your needs.

What camera do you have? Do you shoot RAW or JPEG? Do you intend to print your photos and if so how big? Answers to these questions would help determine your laptop requirements - although for photo editing I always prefer a desktop and large monitor.
