Anyone used the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry?

We're off to the Netherlands in a week or 2, taking the ferry from Newcastle (ker-ching!!!!
)
Does anyone have any hints, tips or experiences on how to save spending yet more on the journey? We are 2 adults and a toddler.
We're planning to have a pub lunch on the way to the ferry and then just take a light meal (packed tea) to have in our cabin in the evening, and take our own breakfast too, on the way there at least. As far as I can tell, an evening meal on board for 2 adults & a small child who will probably eat like a bird would cost £50 or more which is just crazy.
But I've just noticed that the T&C say:
Can I bring my own food and drink?
The Master and other officers on board may make and enforce such reasonable regulations as they see fit in order to preserve the safety, comfort and enjoyment of the passengers and crew.
Passengers are not allowed to eat or drink items that have not been purchased on board in public or cabin areas. Any food and drink found maybe confiscated.
I really hope this is just them covering themselves in case somebody takes the mickey, not yet another way to fleece their customers
It's not entirely clear whether this includes in our cabin, or just the public areas but it looks like I may need to be subtle!

We've were on it a few years ago. Nobody will stop you taking food or drink on board or from eating them in your cabin or up on deck. They might say something if you walk into the restaurant, sit down at a table and whip out your sandwiches, but that's it. That rule is really just there to stop people going to the duty free, buying a bottle of vodka and spending the night drinking it in one of the bars.0

If you go as a group they will probably search your bags on the way in for alcohol but as a family you will be fine.
Dont forget to take your sea legs!0 -

What drivel.
No ferry company searches anyone's bags - they have no legal right or operational need to do so.
The OP can take whatever food and drink they wish on board - although they need to be sensible about where they consume it.0
