Bulk Plasterboard

Hi,

I'm moving house in a couple of weeks, and having found asbestos in the ceiling we are having it removed. I'm planning to plasterboard the ceiling when the job is done and have someone come in and skim it thereafter.

I'm after bulk plasterboard something like 100 sheets of 12mm, could anyone recommend a supplier?

Any main stream trade warehouse or builders merchants will be able to supply that amount of boarding.
Jewson - Keyline - Travis Perkins to name but a few

Hi Billett05, I have my cellar lined with Asbestos that I am trying to get removed at the moment.

Probably about a dozen boards and I have been quoted 4K for removal.

Could you tell me how much you have and how much you have been quoted to have it removed please.?

    Hi,

I have roughly 140sqm (every part of ceiling in my 3 bed house), I have been quoted as low at £2500+vat and as high as £6500+vat

4k I would say is high for you job from the info given. I would recommend getting several quotes, asbestos companies dont mind distance jobs.

100 sheets really? Each sheet is 2.88 metres sq. so the house has a floor area of 288square metres nearly 3100 sq ft) an average 1930s semi is app 1100 sq ft. So your house is 3 times the size of an average semi?

Might need to take a tape measure with you.

Plus in realistic terms, 100 sheets isn't bulk, so don't expect a massive discount.

Lackingwedge and Billett05 you do know that you can remover asbestos board yourself don't you ?

Providing you don't break the board all you need to do is double wrap them and arrange to dispose of them at your council tip. All you need is the correct PPE masks and disposable overalls and away you go, not a job for the fain hearted given but is a diy-able job and will save you some serious cash.

    Hi Muckybutt.

I plan to do just that if I cannot get an affordable quote.

My plan is to line the cellar with plastic sheeting like Dexter's Kill room. spray the board with watered down PVA. Remove the board, wrap it isn sheeting and tape it up. Take it out to the garden and tape it up again then paint the cellar with emulsion to seal in any remaining asbestos. Then remove the sheeting, and wrap that up too.

I have got the overrals and mask as well as the protective shoe coverings from screwfix so i will be looking like someone out of CSI.

However the sheeting is nailed in pretty tight so i will struggle to get the nails out using a traditional claw hammer. Any suggestions?

Normally I would but I have a 1 year old and i would rather ensure it's done properly than put her at risk in any way.

    That's fair enough.
I currently don't live in the property and will not be moving in within the next two months.

Once I have cleared and painted the cellar, I'll be opening all the windows and doors as much as possible.

You might want to consider a decent filtered extraction unit on hire.

    a) you will create some airborne dust and b) the cost considering your savings will be minimal, I'd sooner have the crap out of the house rather than settling only to be disturbed again later.

I too would tackle it myself.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
