Firstly why Telephone was not added to this Gas and Electric forum I will never know, as these are the 3 main household utilities.

Anyway I cannot beleive that B.T has the right to charge cutomers an added charge of £4.50 per quarter if they refuse to pay their bill by direct debit as from July 1st 2007.

Who the hell do they thing they are , are they not making enough money out of us already without devicing a new scheme to claw even more money out of us  .

Is this actually legal ! do they have the right to this !

Are we all going to act like sheep and do as we are told once again.

What do you think !! your comments would be welcome.

I think it's the way a lot of these companies are going - I know Virgin do the same. Apparently it's not a 'charge', it's a 'discount for paying by direct debit'.
How about people who haven't got bank accounts, like some elderly people, low income families etc?
Just another money making exercise for the big companies, really. :(

Suprising what the Red Mist obscures. ;)

PS, for when the post gets moved,

I think that is more than that a month with Virgin, well NTL, who started it. Another follow-my-lleader, in what we can get the Brits to put up with.

Same applies to "call connection charge" a self fullfilling historical fundraiser.

Their is a seperate forum for telecom matters.

You have always paid more if you havent paid by D/D with BT why complain now? (previously £1 a month now £1.50p).
    See http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=400053
Your note in it that MSE Martin recommends you pay by d/d to save money.

Ofcom are looking into it,and hopefully will rule on its fairness by Autumn.

As said above there is a separate forum for telecom matters.

However nobody seems to object when Gas/Electricty companies offer discounts for payment by DD.

If you look at what BT are doing it is exactly the same - offering a discount for payment by DD(as the post above states) they have just increased it by 50p a month.

I suspect BT have worded it this way(stick not carrot*) in an attempt to persuade more people to change to DD and it has caused the 'red mist' response from people like the OP.

*Carrot = "If you pay by DD you will get a £1.50 a month discount."

Stick = "If you don't pay by DD we will charge you £1.50 a month more than DD customers"

They may call it a discount but I prefer to believe that the prices have been manipulated up for all non dd payers to make it look like it is a discount.
