Thanks all. I've had my European Ballot papers for next week so I'm happy its only myself and the good lady on the electoral roll. I'll just keep sticking them back in the letter box.

If you have bought the house, put it back in a postbox with gone away written on it,if you are renting, give it to the landlord.

Posties have to deliver to the address as if it is rented it should be passed on to the landlord, problem is we cant say for sure if a house is bought or rented.
I have a deep burning indifference
  • You don't have to prove anything to anyone (unless you are in court)

Opening this persons mail is a legal grey area and could land you in trouble, you need 'reasonable excuse' to open someone else's mail or it's illegal (which you may or may not have)

Simply score through the address with a pen
write on the front of the envelope: "NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS, RETURN TO SENDER"
place it back into a post box, which is free of charge
If there is no return address visible, Royal Mail has a returned letter centre in Belfast where they are allowed to open the mail in an attempt to identify the sender so they can return it. The returned letter centre can add these details to their database and the unwanted mail should stop. If they can't identify who the mail should be sent to, the item will be destroyed.

The pre-approved Vanquis card doesn't mean he's trying to use the address to get credit, this is something companies sometimes do to get customers to use their card and the phone letters could simply be contract renewal/expiry letters or automated offers.

If you are worried just keep a check on the electoral role (without being on this he won't be able to use your address for much, plus you have control of the post). Keep sending the letters back, ignore the bailiffs and it will go away of it's own accord.

Fed up of final demands, whining relatives and Debtors' Prison?

  • From the CAB website:

"Opening someone else’s mail is allowed in certain circumstances under the Postal Services Act 2000. It is only an offence if you open someone else’s mail ‘without reasonable excuse’ or if you ‘intend to act to another’s detriment'. For example, if you are receiving bank statements/cards in someone else’s name then you should act on that immediately. You should tell the sender, either by returning it marked “not known at this address” or by opening the mail and calling any number provided within. The “reasonable excuse” for opening such items would then be that you were helping to prevent fraud against the companies involved."

The OP is quite entitled to open mail addressed to this third party if they believe that this person's past financial history may have an effect on their own financial status.
